SUMMARY:Elementary Science Assessments: New Landscape Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Computational thinking is increasingly recognized as foundational to science learning — but finding validated tools to measure it in early grades is harder than it should be. \nIt’s one of the topics our webinar speakers were uniquely positioned to address. On Wednesday\, July 29\, Dr. Bill Penuel moderated a webinar with Drs. Megan Silander\, Sania Zaidi\, and Lukas Winfield from EDC.org — the leads behind the Elementary Science Collection\, housed as an Annenberg Institute’s EdInstruments collection. Together they  covered: \n\nWhat assessments currently exist for measuring early elementary science learning\nHow science assessment has evolved alongside NGSS and three-dimensional learning\nKey gaps and debates in the field\nHow to use the collection to find the right tools for your work\n\nMegan is a Principal Research Scientist at EDC and leads national and international initiatives advancing pre-K–12 education policy and programs. Sania is a Senior Research Scientist at EDC and an expert in assessment design and K–12 STEM instructional literacy. SUMMARY:Landscape Analysis of PreK to Grade 5 Science Assessments: Ready for Researchers
DESCRIPTION:Researchers: Learn about a new landscape analysis of elementary science assessments for research use\, explore a searchable database of assessment tools\, and discover how these resources can support your research on elementary science learning and instruction. \nThis webinar will introduce findings from a new landscape analysis of PreK–Grade 5 science assessments conducted by researchers at the Center to Advance Elementary Science Assessment\, Research\, & Technology (CAESART). \nUsing a systematic review methodology\, the study identified and cataloged assessments developed over the past two decades to measure elementary students’ science learning for research purposes. \nDuring the session\, facilitators will present an overview of the landscape of science and engineering assessments\, including key characteristics such as NGSS alignment\, grade-level focus\, psychometric properties (e.g.\, validity and reliability evidence)\, and assessment formats (e.g.\, open-response and multiple-choice). \nParticipants will also be introduced to a sample of the assessments identified in the review. Presenters will share highlights from the findings related to both the resources currently available to researchers and gaps in the field where additional measures of student learning are needed. Facilitators will also share a publicly available database of elementary science assessments and lead a discussion about how researchers can use this resource to support studies of elementary science teaching and learning.
